HALF DAY (approx 2 hrs)

Learn about an outbreak of plague where one third of the population of Chorley died! Hear about the symptoms of the disease and discover how people thought it was spread. One of your pupils will then dress up in the bizarre-looking Plague Doctor’s costume to examine their classmates!

The children will visit a re-creation of a Physick Garden (weather permitting) where you will learn the importance of medicinal herbs in the 17th century. Under the supervision of a costumed facilitator, you will then make your very own posy bag to keep the plague away.

Next, you will be introduced to a Barber–Surgeon’s tool kit. You will learn how hairdressers conducted amputations and operations without pain relief or anaesthetic!

Finally, you will study a patient’s urine to diagnose illness (just like a 17th century Physician), and you will devise a course of treatment based on their date of birth!

Cost

The workshop costs £4 per pupil. Accompanying adults are free.
